Blue Envelope Program aids with communication difficulties
The Redlands Police Department has joined in the Blue Envelope Program, a voluntary initiative designed to enhance communication and understanding between law enforcement and individuals with disabilities, particularly those with autism, dementia, anxiety or other conditions that may affect their ability to communicate during a traffic stop or other interactions with police.
The purpose of the program, developed in collaboration with community-based service providers and supported by the San Bernardino County Chiefs of Police, is to assist community members with a condition or disability to communicate with law enforcement or other emergency service personnel where additional accommodation could be helpful.
Individuals may readily display the Blue Envelope logo or present a Blue Envelope upon contact with law enforcement or other community service personnel. The Blue Envelope branded products can contain an individual’s identification, contact information, or pertinent vehicle operating documents, such as vehicle registration, proof of insurance or other additional information.
The envelope includes a section for typed or handwritten notes to provide the law enforcement officer with advice for assisting communication with the driver or passenger. The Blue Envelope logo should not influence enforcement decisions or officer safety considerations. The Blue Envelope Program does not require the use of a blue envelope.
The Blue Envelope Program is free, voluntary and self-implemented. No registration is required.
