Hours of Operation:
Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Closed on Sundays, Mondays, and all major holidays.

Telephones are answered beginning at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday until closing time each day. Voice messages may be left at other times and will be acted upon as soon as staff is available. If you have an emergency after office hours, you may call the Redlands Police Department at (909) 798-7681 extension 1.

The front office is a busy area within our shelter, receiving more than 15,000 miscellaneous telephone calls in a year. The front office clerks are also responsible for dispatching field traffic to the officers, processing adoptions, relinquished animals, owner reclaims, computer entry, filing reports, and other related duties.

The Kennels

If your lost animal is not found in our shelter, we encourage you to post on social media.

If you are looking to adopt, shelter staff will assist you in handling the animal you are interested in. Dogs may be taken by leash out to the front where our adoption viewing pens are located. There you will be able to interact with the dog before making your decision to adopt. Cats may be handled inside the cattery, with doors closed of course, to enjoy the cat snuggled up in your arms.

Maintaining our kennels and cattery is a continuous process. The runs and cages are cleaned and disinfected each day, and all the animals are fed before the doors open for public view. The kennel runs and cat cages are cleaned throughout the entire day to keep our animals healthy and living in a suitable and clean environment.

Our animals are cared for in this manner seven days a week including holidays. A day does not go by without attention given to our animal population. Equally as important, virtually everyday an animal is brought into the shelter, subsequently the population changes somewhat daily.

Animal Services Officers respond to a variety of calls for service. Officers enforce municipal codes as well as State and Federal laws pertaining to animals. Officers handle a variety of both domestic and wild animals. They patrol our city streets looking for dogs running at large, dead animals, injured animals, and aggressive animals. In addition, they handle reports dealing with animal cruelty or neglect, animal welfare concerns, animals in distress, noisy animals and animal attacks. Officers also have the ability to issue citations and assist in investigations.

You may choose to adopt from a large population of animals from our shelter. All animals adopted that are two (2) months of age or older are sent out to a veterinary hospital to be surgically altered prior to the new owner taking possession of the new pet. The new pet owner then goes directly to the animal hospital to collect their animal and no additional fees are owed unless they make prior arrangements for additional services. The City of Redlands pays any cost above the deposit paid by the adopter to cover the total cost of the surgery. You may choose to pay by cash, check, credit card or debit card for your adoption.

If your pet should happen to be impounded at the shelter, unfortunately there will be fees associated with the reclaim of your animal. These fees are collected to cover the cost of the impoundment, board, vaccination and care of the animal while housed at the shelter.

Dogs are given vaccinations upon impoundment to protect them due to the exposure to other dogs already housed at the shelter and from exposure from running loose on the street.

Cats are given a vaccination upon impoundment to protect them due to exposure to other cats already housed at the shelter.

Owner Release For Euthanasia

If you desire to have your animal humanely euthanized, the San Bernardino Humane Society offers this service at no cost. They are located at 347 W. Orange Show Road, San Bernardino, CA 92408. Their phone is (909) 386-1400.

Found Stray Animals

If a stray animal is found within the City of Redlands, please attempt to find the owner.

Have the animal scanned for a microchip. The Redlands Animal Shelter or a local veterinarian can assist by checking an animal for a microchip.

License required (R.M.C. 6.04.020)

It is unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to own, harbor, possess or have custody of any dog within the City without securing a license for the dog.

Vaccination required (R.M.C. 6.04.140)

It is unlawful for any person to own, have an interest in, harbor, feed or have the care, custody or possession of a dog, whether the dog is confined or not, unless the dog has been currently vaccinated with a State approved rabies vaccine.

Running at large unlawful (R.M.C. 6.04 170)

Any person owning or having charge, custody, control or possession of any dog shall not permit such animal to run at large, or to run loose or unrestrained in, along or upon any public street, sidewalk or place.

Quarantine for dog bite (R.M.C. 6.04.190)

Whenever it is shown that any dog has bitten any person, the owner or person having custody or possession of the dog shall, upon order of the Chief of Police, quarantine the dog and keep it tied up or confined on the owner’s property for a period of 10 days.

Noisy animals prohibited (R.M.C. 6.24.120)

No person shall own or keep any animal within the City which, by frequent barking, howling, yelping, whining or the making of other noise, disturbs the peace of the neighborhood or causes excessive discomfort to any reasonable person of normal sensitivity residing in the area.

Accessory uses (R.M.C. 18.40.040 G)

The keeping of not more than three adult dogs and three adult cats, and their litters up to the age of ten weeks.

If you reside inside the City limits and own a dog, you must secure a City dog license for your pet per Municipal Code 6.04.020. Your dog is required by law to be licensed by four (4) months of age, within 30 days of moving to the City or within 30 days of acquiring a dog.

You must obtain a State approved rabies vaccination for your dog that must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. The vet will provide you with a rabies certificate. This certificate must be presented to the Revenue Division office as proof of vaccination when you purchase your dog’s license.

The first vaccination will be good for a 12-month period. The license will also be good for one year. When the dog is re-vaccinated, the vaccine will protect your pet for a three-year period per Municipal Code 6.04.140.

A City license must be purchased yearly. The license fee for a one-year period is $40.00 for unaltered and $20.00 for altered as long as presented within the 30-day period; otherwise, penalties will apply per Municipal code 6.04.090. In order to obtain the altered rate, the certificate of alteration/sterilization must be presented to the Revenue Division. For replacement dog tags, due to lost or stolen, a replacement fee of $23.00 will be required.

Your rabies vaccination protects your pet against the deadly rabies virus. The State of California is still considered a rabies state. The City of Redlands has had ten (10) bats test positive in a three-year period. This is reason enough to abide by vaccination laws. Your City license assists in providing proof of vaccination and is a great way for shelter staff to identify your animal should your dog be impounded. Shelter staff will be able to trace the license number directly to you and will be able to notify you immediately that your dog has been picked up. You then can be reunited with your animal quickly.

Where are you located?

The shelter is located at 504 N. Kansas Street (on the corner of Park and Kansas). This is between Tennessee and Alabama south of Redlands Boulevard.

I need to give up my pet. Can you help?

Our staff takes pride in being able to offer alternative resources to your pet and you. We have a network of rescue groups that may be able to assist you in finding your animal a new loving home.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, check, and credit cards at the shelter

Do you board animals?

We are not a boarding facility but we can certainly help in directing you to many professional boarding facilities in the area

Can you vaccinate my dog or cat?

We do not offer vaccinations to the public. Although we do vaccinate all animals impounded at our shelter for their protection.

Can I have my animal spayed or neutered at your shelter?

We do not have an onsite veterinarian so we cannot offer surgeries. We do spay and neuter all dogs and cats two months or older at time of adoption. They are transported to our contracted veterinarian to be spayed or neutered.

If you need to have your pet spayed or neutered there are low-cost veterinarians available.

Wildlife is coming into my yard, can you help me?

Yes! The shelter offers written material that may help you better understand the wildlife you share your community with. We can assist you in learning how to deter the wild animals from your property, allowing them to continue to survive in the area. You may learn to enjoy and appreciate the wildlife we have.

What can I do about feral or stray cats in my neighborhood?

The Redlands Animal Shelter no longer accepts healthy stray cats. If you find a cat or kitten, within the city of Redlands, in need of assistance due to sickness or injury, please contact the shelter. We can also provide additional resources for free-roaming stray cats in your area

What can I do about barking dogs?

The City has an ordinance pertaining to noisy animals. There is a procedure in place to assist you in resolving your complaint. Call Animal Control for assistance at (909) 798-7644.
