Operating under the direction of the Fire Marshal and guided by the California Fire Code (CFC), the goal of the Community Risk Reduction Division is to safeguard the community from fire through programs ensuring adherence to fire regulations, public education, and mitigation. The division consists of the Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Marshal, two Fire Inspectors and one Administrative Assistant.
The Redlands Fire Department’s Community Risk Reduction Division focuses on wildfire preparedness and community protection by enforcing the California Fire Code, providing public education, and implementing mitigation programs that reduce fire hazards. Their wildfire safety efforts include guidance on the state’s updated Fire Hazard Zone maps, support for FireWise community designation, and resources for home‑hardening and low‑cost retrofits. The department also manages a Vegetation Management (Weed Abatement) Program, conducting inspections in high‑risk areas to ensure properties maintain defensible space and remove hazardous vegetation, with enforcement actions taken when needed. Together, these programs aim to safeguard residents, strengthen community resilience, and reduce the risk of wildfire impacts.
While the City of Redlands does not have any influence or consultation over the criteria utilized for these areas identified by state law, this information below provides resources for our community to navigate this process as well as an overview of our ongoing wildfire safety programs.

Community Risk Reduction personnel conduct weed abatement inspections in the high fire hazard areas in the City twice a year. It is critical that property owners maintain their properties and clear any and all vegetation that can create a fire hazard. With all of the recent rain, we are anticipating another active fire season. Please help us in protecting your property by creating defensible space around your home.
If your property fails the weed abatement inspection you will be sent a notice to remove the hazard. If the hazard is not removed, then the city will have the work performed and the property will be accessed a charge to cover the cost of the work.
