ORDINANCE NO. 2999
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF REDLANDS AMENDING TITLE 6 (ANIMALS) AND TITLE 18 (ZONING REGULATIONS) UPDATING THE LISTS OF PERMITTED AND ACCESSORY LAND USES AND UPDATING DEVELOPMENT STANDARDS PERTAINING TO THE RAISING OR KEEPING OF HENS WITHIN SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL ZONING DISTRICTS.

Ordinance No 2999 Chicken Keeping in Single-Family Zones:

  • Under 4000 Sq. Ft. lot: hens are not allowed.
  • 4000-7200 Sq. Ft. lot: Up to 3 hens are permitted.
  • Larger than 7200 Sq. Ft. lot: Up to 9 hens are permitted.
  • Hens must be housed and may not create noise, odor or sanitation issues.
    • Requires coops and related structures to be:
    • 5 feet from side and rear property lines
    • 15 feet from street side setbacks
    • 10 feet from the main residence
  • Roosters are not permitted. 
  • No animal services permit is required. 

What agencies should I contact to ensure I have all the information and requirements for the selling of eggs?

1) Verify with the City’s Planning Department that the keeping of hens on your property is allowed.

2) Register with the County of San Bernardino Environmental Health Department as a Community Food Producer by completing the Community Food Producer Registration Form in the Food Facilities section. (Cal Code, Section 114376 (b)).

3) Register with the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Egg Safety and Quality Management Program.

4) Contact the local Agricultural Commissioner’s Office if you are planning to use pesticides.
